Photos: Young the Giant at PNC Bank Arts Center 9.4.11

PNC Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ, 9.4.11 – Hot off their appearance at the MTV VMA awards, Young the Giant is in the middle of a string of supporting dates for Incubus.  This was was an interesting pairing since the similarities between the 2 bands go about as deep as they both have 5 members.  Usually you get bands opening for larger bands who have a similar musical style or genre, and hope you gain some more fans in the process.  Young the Giant definitely seemed to win some people in this crowd over, and walked away with a few extra fans.  But it was those that showed up specifically to see Young the Giant that got the reward as they simply “brought it” during their 45 minute set, ending with their current hit, and crowd favorite, “My Body”.

Normally we get to shoot the first 3 songs, but since I was shooting for Young the Giant I had the chance to shoot the entire set.  This is good and bad.  Photographers have rallied around the idea that the 3 song rule isn’t enough.  I actually like the rule.  Sure there are times I want to shoot more, but the 3 song rule forces me to be creative and gives me a bit of a rush to make sue I get my shots in that short window.  And when you shoot a band for 45 minutes you end up with lots of photos which means lots of editing.

PNC has no photo pit.  You shoot from the aisle which limits creativity.  I do run from aisle to aisle like a maniac though.  The glamorous life of a music photographer.
