Governor’s Island, NY, 8.26.11 – With Hurricane Irene about to rip through the NY Metro area, Dave Matthews Band’s Caravan festival was temporarily cut from 3 days to 1. Friday’s Caravan included support from Soulive, Citizen Cope and O.A.R.. DMB allowed people holding tickets for Saturday and Sunday to also come to the Friday night show. Sensing upcoming cabin fever, the weather didn’t slow anyone down and Governor’s Island was filled with people who decided its better to dance a little than to board up the house and batten down the hatches.
Shooting at festivals is always a bit secondary to me. You get lured in by the opportunity to shoot multiple good bands all in the same day, but those bands are usually taking the stage during daylight. As a photographer who lieks playing with stage lighting, it makes for some flat photos. Most of the day today was like this, although by the time Dave Matthews Band came on stage, the night had come and the lights were on.
There were 2 stages at Caravan, both of which were very high which limited the wider shots I like to take. Most of what you see was taken with the 70-200 in order to avoid stage monitors and chopped feet.
